10 Years of DOOM

December 10, 1993 - the shareware version of DOOM was released.  Today, it is the tenth anniversary of this classic FPS, the game I've been fascinated by, for several years now!  And starting today, for the next three or four days, several sites will have lots of interesting content related to the game that revolutionised 3D gaming!

First of all there's the 6-level demo of Flashback, a megawad by Torn, Espi, Erik Alm and others, which features maps in the style of the original Doom.  Expected some seventeen hours from now is Daedalus, the next big megawad from TeamTNT!  Sunday's Doomworld /newstuff Chronicles is going to have lots of WADs released to celebrate the occasion as well.  And Doomworld has set up 10 Years of Doom, a sub-site which will feature several interesting articles over the next four days - including a list of the 100 best WADs ever, a history of Demos, a history of Ports, and lots of other cool stuff.

I haven't posted in the Doomworld Forums at all since September (or probably even before that), and contact with fellow Doomers has been rare.  But I have been downloading all the new WADs released in that period - transferring them to my computer from the college computers on floppy or CD-Rs.  Today I actually saved all the pages from the 10 Years site and also downloaded the Flashback demo.  I plan to download all the articles that Doomworld's going to have, though I will have lots of work in the next few days!

On December 18th, the End Term Exams for my Second Term at TAPMI start, they will get over on 20th.  The next one week I will spend at the Outbound programme, and after that, I will get to spend three days at home!!  There is lots of news to write - two major events at TAPMI, BrandScan and Atharva got over recently - but it will all have to wait.  I will probably write that huge update when I get home.  For now, I wrote this update on the occasion of Doom's 10th birthday!

By the way, my site's Doom section has all my Doom WADs that I've made over the last couple of years.

My brother Varun updated his site also recently, and he has made a new site theme for me.  I haven't added it to the Customise page yet, but you can apply it by clicking this link.  It is an amazing theme, by the way, even by Varun's usually high standards!

More later, got to play Flashback now...

Dark Fate 2 — a Doom II map by Karthik Abhiram

Dark Fate 2 is a singleplayer level for Doom II, replacing MAP01.  It's a small-sized hellish level — and there's a walkthrough video as well.
